How search works

Understand discovery, crawling, indexing, ranking, and clicks before trying to optimize anything.

Goal

Understand what must happen before a Vishow Tools page can receive search traffic.

Concept

A useful mental model is:

Published page → discovered → crawled → indexed → ranked → clicked

A page being online does not mean a search engine has indexed it, and being indexed does not guarantee that it ranks for a useful query.

Why it matters

SEO problems belong to different stages. If a page cannot be crawled, rewriting its title will not solve the real problem. If it is indexed but rarely clicked, the problem may instead involve relevance, ranking, or search-result presentation.

Vishow Tools example

Use the Password Generator as the first practice page. Ask:

  1. Can search engines discover the URL?
  2. Can they crawl it?
  3. Is it allowed to be indexed?
  4. What topic and purpose does the page communicate?
  5. For which queries could it be relevant?
  6. Do searchers actually click it?

The current test deployment intentionally uses noindex, so production indexing is not expected yet.

CMS practice

Open CMS → SEO and inspect the Password Generator row. Notice the indexing state, sitemap status, title length, description length, and schema type. Do not edit anything in this lesson.

Measure

For now, verify only the technical state in CMS. After production launch, Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools become the authoritative sources for crawl/index/search-performance evidence.

CMS gap check

Can CMS → SEO clearly tell you whether the page is intended for indexing and included in the sitemap? If yes, no CMS change is needed for this lesson.

What you learned

SEO is easier to diagnose when you identify the stage first: crawl → index → rank → click.
